Let's Talk About Beads 101: Black Tourmaline

We're back with another installment of our Let's Talk About Beads 101 series. This time around we are discussing Black Tourmaline. Tourmaline can be found in a wide variety of colors. We'll discuss the other variations in the future.

Black Tourmaline is an absolutely beautiful and mesmerizing stone. There is something about the richness of the black that always draws people in. 

The name tourmaline dates back to the 18th century and was derived from Sinhalese, a Sri Lankan language. Tura mali in Sinhalese means "unknown gemstones of mixed colors."  

Black Tourmaline is found in Africa, China, Brazil, Pakistan, and the US. It has a hardness rating of 7 to 7.5, meaning it is durable enough to be used in various jewelry applications. While it is a durable stone, large temperature changes should be avoided as that can cause Black Tourmaline to fracture. 

Black Tourmaline is believed to be a protective stone for people who work and/or live in challenging settings. It is believed to repel negative energy, and it is great for use in times of crisis or extreme stress. It is also said to calm the negative emotions that upset relationships.

Black Tourmaline has been said to help dispel fear, judgment, worry, anger, and shame. It has also been said to encourage love, gently disperse emotional pain and dissolve disruptive feelings. 

Fun fact, tourmaline acquires an electric charge when heated or rubbed. This allows tourmaline to attract small objects like dust and ashes.
