Caring for your sterling silver jewelry

Sterling silver is not only beautiful, it is also versatile. .925 sterling silver (the rating/type we use), is sturdy and doesn't require as much cleaning as other ratings. However, to get the most out of your sterling silver jewelry, you must take a few steps to care for it. 

First things first, it is normal for sterling silver to tarnish. Tarnishing is the result of exposure to oxygen and sulfur in the air. In order to prevent tarnishing, you can store it in an airtight container or plastic storage bag (remove all of the air before sealing). As a slight aside, it is best to store pieces separately in order to prevent damage from scratching.

Second, while sterling silver can be exposed to water, water that is not purified can cause sterling silver jewelry to tarnish or get dull. 

As with all jewelry, it is essential to prevent or at least minimize exposure to sweat, perfumes, lotions, harsh chemicals, and excessive sunlight. 

Sterling silver jewelry can be cleaned using a jewelry cloth or any clean microfiber cloth, using an up and down wiping method. To clean intricate pieces with grooves and/or other details, you can use a cotton-tipped applicator. 

For a deeper clean, there a couple of options. 1 - You can make a paste from 2 parts water and 1 part baking soda. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush to apply the paste. 2 - You can apply a mild dish detergent and rinse with water.
