Seeing that our business is handmade jewelry, this blog page is, and will continue to be, centered around jewelry-related topics. The topics may change a bit, but they will always have something to do with our experiences while running our handmade jewelry business. We may do anything from providing insight about the business side of things to providing some helpful educational tips and all things between.

For this post, we have decided to elaborate on the topic covered in our last post (Click HERE to read). This post will provide some facts about brass jewelry and tips for cleaning it.

Let’s start out with discussing the pros and cons of brass jewelry.

PROS:

  • Brass jewelry is considerably less expensive than precious metals (gold and silver). This makes it ideal for the budget-conscious shopper.

  • Brass is durable and can withstand a decent amount of wear and tear.

  • Brass is versatile and can be made in a variety of shapes and styles.

  • Brass has warmer, more distinct color than other metals. This provides for a more unique look to designs.

CONS:

  • Some people might be allergic to brass. This might be due to the nickel content.

  • Brass can tarnish over time.

  • Brass requires regular cleaning and polishing to maintain its shine and to prevent tarnishing.

  • Brass jewelry might not have as long of a lifespan as precious metals.

Bottom Line:

If you prefer unique designs and are on a budget – brass might be the choice for you. Just keep in mind that you will have to put in some work to get your brass jewelry to last longer.

Now let’s discuss how to clean and maintain brass jewelry. Brass jewelry can be cleaned at home with easily available products.

  1. Make a cleaning solution: Mix equal parts of vinegar and water in a bowl. Lemon juice can be used instead of vinegar.

  2. Dip the brass jewelry in the cleaning solution: Dip the jewelry in the solution. Let the jewelry soak for a few minutes.

  3. Scrub the brass jewelry: Using a soft-bristled toothbrush, gently scrub to remove dirt and crud. Make sure to get into any crevices and corners.

  4. Rinse the brass jewelry: Rinse the jewelry under running water to remove any residue.

  5. Dry the brass jewelry: Pat the jewelry dry with a soft cloth. Make sure to dry completely to prevent tarnishing.

  6. Optional step: If the brass jewelry has tarnished heavily, a commercial brash cleaner/polish can be used to remove the tarnish.

*MOST IMPORTANTLY*

- Do not use abrasive materials or harsh chemicals – this can damage the brass jewelry.

- Store brass jewelry in a dry place to prevent tarnishing.
